A dilemma.....

My eldest has just been talking to me about the possibility of him moving back into my sewing room and me having the small room where he currently slobs out instead. He then said our house is very nice but 'it really is cluttered,Mum.You have stuff all over the place' Bearing mind that we have very little storage space anywhere,it isn't that bad.The clutter seems to consist of the seventy five pairs of trainers and coats that seem to rest on every available surface.
However,as I cast my eye around I do see a lot of dust catching stuff and a terrible thought strikes me that maybe I am over my granny chic phase!!
Maybe I do need less stuff on show, maybe I don't need fifty plates on the walls or thirty jugs, and umpteen chairs.Maybe I should chuck it all out and be more minimalist in my twilight years.I am now sorely troubled. For years I have loved the pared down Scandinavian style which is light and bright and I have tried this in the bedrooms. It looks so tranquil and restful but can be hard to keep looking clean and pristine.

Then I get hungry for colour and bold prints and have to add colourful accessories and throws etc.I flit between this cool living with a predominantly  white palette to a more bohemian folky sort of look with a dollop of vintage granny-chic thrown in.Am I just a style tart?

Now I really am in a quandary. What to do?I know I have to do something but maybe I'd better wait for kinder weather and light.
Hope your weekend has been restful

I really think it's up to you and your other half (you then!) You're the ones who work hard to pay for your home and I'm afraid son needs to be grateful for a roof over his head! I love lots of different styles but I know exactly what you mean, that sometimes you look round and wonder if it's a bit much. Perhaps you could pare back a bit, sell some things in the shop, but really, if you like granny chic and lots of things round you, then that's absolutely fine. I think a plain backdrop is good, adding all your colourful and pretty bits on top. I know bloggers who have boxes of things packed away and then brings things out seasonally and rotate their collections and must say, I;m headed that way myself. Why deny yourself?! That's what your twilight years are for...

Thank you ,Hen, for the moral support.I think you are right.I may just pack some stuff away because I know I would regret parting with my treasures.I'm going to try the one in one out approach from now on.I really hate living in a house full of men all of whom are evangelical minimalists. They think that all you need is a leather sofa and a flat screen tv!!

My house (and shed) is full of junk/stuff which my two sons left behind when they fled the nest. In the spring, when I have my new kitchen put in, I`m hiring a skip and chucking the lot out!If they don`t need it, neither do I!I think it`s good to pare down now and again - gives you a great `light` feeling and less to dust!I have to say though, with all those lovely things in your shop, it would be difficult not to fill your house with them!

Hi Anne,

I've been one of the lucky people to step foot in and hang out in your welcoming and cosy home. You do so much in your life away from home and I think it should be your place that screams 'you' and a place where you feel right at home. At the end of the day us mummy's do the house work and when you live in it day to day you don't see what everyone else sees...style,homespun and a dream home. Tell the boys to stop whinging and watch the football. Hen is right twilight years are for doing what you like...you need a girly night one thinks xxxx

I love everything about the second set of photos, although I know where you're coming from. My husband calls all my plates, cups and little odds and ends 'tat' (I suppose it is really, they all come from charity shops!), and it really does look like a total mish mash. I don't think I'd have it any other way though - a toddler and a white interior is not a healthy mix! I agree with previous comments - your home is your castle and should reflect who you are, maybe put some things away so there is the same effect but sort of, 'less'? I'm sure whatever you decide will look lovely.

Hi
Well I know what you mean, I hate throwing things out, but we are moving in the spring so think I might have to have a sort out pretty soon. Just imagine you have just moved in, and re-arrange your things, putting some away for when you feel like a change, but perhaps wait for the warmer spring weather, might give you more inspiration.
Thanks for dropping by to my blog, and wish you luck with the give-away.

Hmmmm...
I am all for a good cathartic tidy up/clear out of excess, but at the end of the day, they are your belongings because you love them and they bring you happiness to live your life amongst lovely, inspiring objects.
I have the same from my old man and daughter .. I tell them 'this is me, take it or leave it' :-)

I love all the photos, but the ones with more color definitely catch my eye. I've been wanting lots and lots of color lately. Fun!
